What are the steps you need to take before starting a podcast? From an idea to your first recording, here is a summary of the steps you need to take to create a podcast:
Develop Your Concept
The initial step to start a podcast is developing and planning your concept. First, you must choose a topic. Focus on a subject that you can elaborate and speak about for a substantial amount of time, but not so broad that it misses your target audience.
Afterward, decide on your podcast name. Looking at the Apple Podcasts charts, you can find a wide variety of examples. Try to use a broad, descriptive one as it may allow you to delve into general topics occasionally. The podcast description is also significantly vital. Many new listeners judge your show based on it.
Set up the Podcast
After developing your idea, you can set up your podcast format. The standard formats are interview podcasts, news recap, educational, and scripted. There isn’t an optimal show length, so make it as long as you want.
Regarding podcast recording and publishing schedule, it depends on your time available. If you’re considering it a full-time job, having an episode every week is ideal. It’s the fastest way to attract and connect with new podcast listeners.
Record and Edit Your Podcast
Now that you have laid the groundwork, it’s time to work towards recording your first episode. Podcasts have a low entry barrier, meaning that you can begin with the bare minimum.
To begin podcasting, all you require is either a computer with a USB microphone and internet access. Even a phone has everything you need to record a podcast. Of course, the lower the cost of your recording equipment, the worse is the sound quality.
There’s an incredible amount of equipment that’s great for podcasting. It’s also a good idea to check the gear of other podcasters with a format similar to yours or to see a more in-depth guide.
With your gear sorted out, you need some recording and audio editing software to start your podcast. There are several good options such as:
For remote guests and co-hosted shows, a popular, free audio recording tool is Zoom. However, the best one available is Squadcast, which offers significantly high audio quality.
One of the listed recording software, Alitu, can do that as well, so if you like to have everything on a single platform, you might be interested in it. This software is also the most straightforward option for editing. It essentially makes new episodes by itself. Of course, you can also wash your hands and pay someone else to handle post-production.
Afterward, scripting comes into play. You can use some bullet points with the topics you want to cover for every episode.
Regarding podcast music, there isn’t a rule saying that it’s necessary. Some choose to add the intro music to add professionalism but avoid playing it for more than 10 seconds.
Publish Your Podcast Episode
First impressions matter, so it’s essential to have a suitable podcast cover art as it allows your show to stand out from the rest. You can hire a freelancer, reach out to a friend, or help yourself with stock images on platforms such as Canva to create the podcast artwork.
Afterward, choose your podcast hosting service, also called a media host. These allow you to store your audio files and let the public download, listen, and subscribe. A popular, cheap podcast host option is Buzzsprout.
After you submit your podcast episodes to it, its RSS feed automatically updates every podcast directory your show may be in, such as Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
Market and Grow Your Podcast
These are the finishing steps after you make a podcast. You want to promote your work to reach out to potential listeners. Some helpful marketing tactics are sharing the show with friends and family, posting the podcast website and episodes on social media, contacting blogs, and so on. With this out of the way, you know have all the basics necessary to make your podcast!
