You only have a few minutes to grab someone’s attention at the beginning of your show. How do you persuade the listeners in these few first minutes and make them stick around? How do you write a good podcast intro?

Your sound is arguably the centerpiece of your podcast identity. If you think it’s all about your voice, then you’re wrong. We don’t doubt that you sound amazing, but music and other sound effects can complement that sweet voice greatly.

First, you need to choose sounds that are subliminally achieving the effect that you imagine your podcast should have at different points. Next, they need to complement your voice and not fight with it. One of the worst things you can do is choose background music that drowns you out.

Apart from music, try to use other effects that give your podcast an air of uniqueness. During the podcast intro, you want a slow yet dramatic feel for your users. However, as you describe the podcast, you want your sound to be more along the inspiring and upbeat side of the spectrum.

Don’t Drag On

Unfortunately, we live in a world where attention spans are way more limited than they were many years ago. How many times have you gone on to a platform, such as YouTube, and checked the length of a video before deciding to watch it?

Unfortunately, unless a content creator is super engaging on the platform, it’s going to be hard to have people stick around for more than five minutes.

Apply that kind of thinking to your podcast too. The better you get at creating a podcast intro that say all you want to say concisely, the more likely you are going to be able to engage and retain an audience.

For a 60-minute show, there is nothing wrong with having a two-minute podcast intro.

Saying What’s Important

So, you’ve heard about not dragging on while saying what you need to say. The keyword here is “need.” what do you have to get out there with your introduction?

You want to greet your audience, as it’s both polite and a great way to help people feel engaged with your content. Next, it’s a very good idea to provide identification. Here, you can share the podcast name and even the name of the host, so people know who they’re listening to. It’s also a good idea to introduce any guests that you may have with you. Finally, why are people there listening to you? Why should they stick around? What’s the value of your podcast? You need to ensure that people know what they are in for. So, here’s a bit of an example for you

“Hey guys, this is none other than Chris and you’re listening to the Daily Planet Podcast. It seems we’re hearing more about the worrying state of the planet every day. What can you do to act? Why should you care? Well, today I’m gonna sit down with everyone’s resident expert Jill Brown to discuss how bad things are and what you can do today as an average Joe.”

That example was very short. It identifies the speaker, what the podcast is about, what to expect, who the guest is, and even the value that you are going to get from listening to it.

Episodic Uniqueness

Some podcasters do great with having a standard intro. However, We’re here to tell you that switching things up from episode to episode is probably a great idea. it’s creative, gives longtime listeners something to look forward to, and encourages you to keep invested.

Another way to implement this strategy is to keep each intro for a period before you switch to new ones at regular intervals.
